A daughter's steadfast love and gratitude for her father became the foundation for the Father's Day Holiday. In the spring of 1910 Sonora Smart Dodd listened to a sermon about Mother's Day at her church. It caused her to remember how her father had raised her when her mother died in child birth. She believed fathers were also a very important part of the family and they deserved a special day too.
Mrs Dodd contacted churches in Spokane Washington and suggested that a day in the month of June should be designated to honor fathers. She chose this month as her father's birthday was the 5th of June.
This was the beginning of several attempts to designate a special day for dad. Father's Day was celebrated in many parts of the country each year in June, however it did not become an official holiday in the United States until President Johnson declared that the 3rd Sunday in June would be Father's Day. In 1972 President Nixon signed the permanent proclamation making it an official holiday.
As Father's Day approaches it is a great time to reflect on how important fathers are in our daily lives. This is a wonderful time to honor our fathers or special men who have served as father figures that have enhanced our lives.
