God Bless Mothers

"Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
                                                                        Proverbs 31:31

Mother's Day became an official holiday in the United States of America over a hundred years ago. On May 9th 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that the second Sunday in May  each year is to be Mother's Day,  as he called on  Americas to celebrate the holiday by "displaying the American flag and for the public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of the country."

The first Mother's Day celebrations had taken place several years before this official proclamation of the holiday. In 1906 Anna Jarvis conducted a Mothers Day gathering to recognize the accomplishments of her mother who had passed away the year before.  In Grafton, West Virginia, her mother Ann Marie Jarvis had created Mothers Day Work Clubs during the Civil War to assist grieving  mothers. As her mother was conducting a lesson titled Mothers of the Bible at the Methodist Church she said a prayer where she hoped that someday there would be a memorial day to mothers living and dead to commemorate their matchless service to humanity. Anna Jarvis then spent the next several years campaigning for a day to honor mothers.

Proverbs 31:15-16
She gets up while it is still dark;
She provides food for her family
And portions for her servant girls.
She considers a filed and buys it;
Out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. God bless our mothers that are up before dawn making our daily life easier.

Psalm 113:9
He settles the barren woman in her home, as a joyful mother of children.

Proverbs 31:25
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

Proverbs 31:28

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.

3 John 1:4
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

Faithful Thoughts and Gifts

This sunrise prayer bible verse is a reminder to not be anxious about anything, instead put our trust in God to guide us through the challenges of life.  Written by apostle Paul when he was in prison, Philippians 4:6-7 continues to provide guidance in managing anxiety in our lives today.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God.
 And the peace of God,
which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
In 2014 this passage from the New International Version Bible were the most popular highlighted verses found in Kindle ebook Bibles according to Amazon. The popularity of these verses indicates how people look to the Bible for help to cope with their daily anxieties as they continue to learn to pray and trust in God.
These are some wonderful unique Christian artworks created on products that keep us close to God in our daily lives.

Old Rugged Cross

The Old Rugged Cross

The Old Rugged Cross  painting
is a watercolor and ink  art work created by Meldra Driscoll.

The hymn The Old Rugged Cross was written by  George Bennard.
He  became Reverend George Bennard at the age of 24 as he  attended Salvation Army meetings until 1898 and then began conducting his own revival meetings and  composing hymns.
Rev. Bennard wrote the words to The Old Rugged Cross over a month as he travel to revivals, as he explains "I seemed to have a vision...I saw the Christ and the cross inseparable."   The hymn was sung first at a revival meeting in Pokegon, Michigan, when it was published in 1913 it was an immediate success.  Over 15 million copies of the hymn had been sold along with several recordings by 1939. This was my Grandmother's favorite hymn and when I hear it still today I  think of her.

A new recording of  The Old Rugged Cross was done by Craig Wayne Boyd in  2014.  As a struggling country artist in Nashville he was about to give up on his dream when he received an email to try out  for The Voice.  He chose to perform The Old Rugged Cross for the competition. Though many considered it risky to preform a gospel song in prime time on network television he won.

The biblical word Hallelujah is a term meaning To Praise God, it is derived from  14th century Hebrew. The word is found twenty four times in the Hebrew Bible most of them in the Book of Psalms, and four times in the Christian Book of Revelations.   The word Hallelujah is often spoken by clergy and their congregations.  A variety of music has been written over the years  where the word is often sung giving it more meaning.
Thirty years ago  Leonard Cohen  created his musical version of  Hallelujah,  he spent  five years composing  the music and  had written eighty different verses before his first recording. The music is a  mix of gospel  and waltz with the original lyrics based on stories from the Bible. These Bible references included Sampson and Delilah from the Book of Judges and King David.  In his own words he explains the meaning of this now classic love song in a interview from 2012.

"This world is full of conflicts and full of things that cannot be reconciled,"
"But there are moments when we can ... reconcile and embrace the whole mess,
and that's what I mean by 'Hallelujah.'"

The first  recording of  Hallelujah had little success, and it was not played much in the United States.  John Cale recorded the song in 1991, it was  then chosen for the movie Shrek in 2001.  Since his original recording in 1984 there have been over a hundred versions of the song performed or recorded.  Hallelujah has also become a popular song for weddings as seen in this 2014 video of  Chris and Leah O'Kane's wedding  where Father Ray Kelly wrote the lyrics and performed the song for the couple.

There is Love

The Classic Love song  Wedding Song (There is Love) was created by  Noel Paul Stookey in 1969.  He wrote the song  as a gift for the other two members of his group that were getting married Peter Yarrow  and Marybeth McCarthy. Their musical group was Peter, Paul and Mary. The song became an immediate hit when he recorded it for the first time in  1971 and has remained a popular choice for wedding ever since then.
Paul believes that it was divine intervention from God that allowed him to write the song after he prayed, he has never taken credit or royalties for the song. In his own words ; "Into every songwriter's life comes a song, the source of which cannot be explained by personal experience..."  He created a public trust fund  titled Public Domain Foundation, Inc.  where  the royalties  from this song are collected and used to promote music in the Music2Life  program.

Love Lifted Me

The hymn Love Lifted Me  was written over one hundred years ago by James Rowe and composed by Howard E.  Smith in 1912.  As a emmigrant James Rowe  worked for the railroad in New York for several years, eventually he moved to Texas and worked for music publishing companies.  He wrote this hymn based on Christ's assurance of love, and scripture from Matthew 8:23-27; 14:22-33; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25.  Love Lifted Me  became a popular hymn  among United Methodists and was  frequently sung from  The Cokesbury Hymnal.
The hymn still remains a popular song today, it is sung in church and other musical events. It is often the theme of Sunday sermons and is found in home decor, jewelry and greeting cards.  Several musical artists have recorded and performed this song over the years including; Alan Jackson, Kenny Rogers, Statler Brothers, and Dolly Parton.  Love Lifted Me  continues to be a popular song for choirs  and religious groups.
