The Columbine  flower is one of the symbols for Pentecost Sunday. This Holy day is celebrated by Christians on the fiftieth day after Easter. The sacred day commemorates the descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles. It marks the end of the Resurrection season and the beginning of the universal Church.  This day is also known as Whitsunday  in European countries.

The white dove symbolizes the baptisms on the first Pentecost Sunday, where red rose petals are also sprinkled to represents the miracle of the fiery tongues from Acts. The Columbine flower is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, derived from the latin word Columba meaning dove. The flower is named for its dove shaped petals that resemble a dove in flight.

This year Pentecost Sunday is celebrated on May 24th. The liturgy  may include readings from Leviticus 23:15-22, Acts 1:4-5 4, The Acts of the Apostles 2:1-4 1 ,Exodus 19:9-11 , 16-19 , Exodus 32:26-29 and Joel 2:28-32.
