She wrote the song along with Gunther Mende, Candy DeRouge and Mary Susan Applegate it was first released as a single in Germany. When it was then released in the United Kingdom in 1985 it became an instant hit song. It was on top of the charts for several weeks and became the best selling single for that year. Jennifer Rush's recording continued to be very popular in countries around the world through 1986. As of 2013 this recording of the song has sold 1.4 million copies in the United Kingdom.

Over the years this powerful song has been recorded by many musical artists including: Laura Branigan, The Shadows, David Alexander, Mark Bautista, Michael Crawfor, Engelbert Humperdinck, Andrea Bocelli, and Mary Duff. In 1993 Celine Dion's recording of The Power of Love was released in North America, it went to the top of the charts quickly were it stayed for several weeks. This was Celine's first number one single in the United States. Once again this recording became popular world wide, to date it has sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States.
