Roses are Red My Love

The Classic love song  Roses are Red My Love was composed by Al Bryon and Paul Evans in  a  few minutes time.   Al Bryon stopped by a recording studio in 1962 to share the lyrics for  a new song.  After reading the lyrics Paul Evans wrote the melody in three minutes,  he had just created the biggest song of his career.  Struggling to find a song that would boost his career as a singer, Bobby Vinton found  a demo record of  Roses are Red My Love  in a stack of discarded  recordings ready for the trash.  He was the first to record this  classic song in  1962  it was an instant hit  for him and the song writers.

When I Fall in Love

The classic love song When I Fall in Love was created  by  composer  Victor Young with lyrics by Edward  Heyman, for the 1952  romantic war movie  One Minute to Zero. The film was produced by Howard Hughes and starred Robert Mitchum and Ann Blyth.  It was filmed  at Fort Carson Army  in Colorado using troops of the 148th Field Artillery. Set during the Korean War it included film  contributions  from the  U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and the South Korean Army.  When I Fall in Love appears only as an instrumental part of the movie.
In June of 1952 Doris Day was the first of many musical artist to record  a hit version of the song with its lyrics. Through the years When I Fall in Love has been recorded by several well known artists including; Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Sandra Dee, The Lettermen, The Carpenters, Tom Jones, Kenny Rogers,  and Barry  Manilow. The song became a hit once again when it was recorded by Celine Dion and Clive Griffin for the romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle in 1993.

When I fall in love it will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun

In 2011  Lindsay Warren Baker and Amanda Jacobs created the muscial Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice  a musical , one on the songs in this musical is titled When I Fall in Love however, it is not the same song that was originally created by Victor Young in 1952. Jane Austen is often incorrectly  given credit for the  quote "
When I fall in love it will be forever" it  does not appear in any of her books.  This quote is the opening lyrics  to the song written by Edward Heyman in 1952.
When you go to see this musical this is the When I Fall in Love  song you will see performed.

HAPPINESS CANNOT BE GUARANTEED.
LOVE DOESN’T ALWAYS ENDURE.
WHEN A GIRL MARRIES, SHE TAKES A CHANCE.
SHE HOPES TO BE HAPPY;
SHE MAY NOT BE HAPPY.
THERE’S NO WAY OF KNOWING FOR SURE.

Today  the original When I Fall in Love  song continues to be on  the list of the top love songs for weddings.
It is often preformed during wedding ceremonies or  during the reception.

Happy 100th Rocky Mountain National Park

Longs Peak  by Hobbyhawk
A 415 mile area of  the Rocky Mountain Range in northern Colorado became Rocky Mountain National Park  on January 26, 1915. This designation created a preservation of the environment  and the culture  for the past one hundred years.

100th anniversary of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Vocal performance by Cowboy Brad Fitch

The park is home to 150 lakes and numerous rivers, including the headwaters of the  Colorado River.  The Rocky Mountains were formed by glaciers thousands of years ago, where at least fifteen of them still remain in the park today.  The mountains carved by these glaciers are spectacular, rising to 14,255 feet in elevation  Longs Peak is the highest of the 125 named mountain peaks in the park.
With miles of hiking trails there is wildlife around every turn from birds to bears.  I have fly fished with ducks, birds, deer, elk, moose and bears in the park. Some of the best fly fishing in Colorado can be found in Rocky Mountain National Park where Rainbow Trout and Native Cutthroat  live in the streams and lakes.
Visit the park everyday  by four available web cams, the Continental Divide web cam  at Glacier Basin Campground, has a spectacular view of the peaks  Thatchtop, Taylor Peak, Otis Peak, Hallett Peak, and Flattop Mountain.

Love Lifted Me

The hymn Love Lifted Me  was written over one hundred years ago by James Rowe and composed by Howard E.  Smith in 1912.  As a emmigrant James Rowe  worked for the railroad in New York for several years, eventually he moved to Texas and worked for music publishing companies.  He wrote this hymn based on Christ's assurance of love, and scripture from Matthew 8:23-27; 14:22-33; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25.  Love Lifted Me  became a popular hymn  among United Methodists and was  frequently sung from  The Cokesbury Hymnal.
The hymn still remains a popular song today, it is sung in church and other musical events. It is often the theme of Sunday sermons and is found in home decor, jewelry and greeting cards.  Several musical artists have recorded and performed this song over the years including; Alan Jackson, Kenny Rogers, Statler Brothers, and Dolly Parton.  Love Lifted Me  continues to be a popular song for choirs  and religious groups.

Cowboy Love

The romantic love of cowboys began as people moved to settle in new lands of the western United States. The folklore and stories of men and their challenges that they faced made them romantic hero's. The cowboy soon became the subject of dime store novels in the 1800's. Ranch Romances was one of many magazines with romantic stories and artwork of the cowboy.
Today nearly 200 years later the love of cowboys and romance remains very popular.  Cowboy romance novels are top sellers as new stories come available every week. Cowboy art is found in home decor and greeting cards.  Cowboy and western love songs are also a part of the romantic cowboy folklore  and they  often remain popular for decades.
The cowboy love song Cowboy Take Me Away was written by Marcus Hummon and Martie Seidel for the Dixie Chicks  in 1999.  The song quickly rose to #1 on the charts and continues to be a popular love song today.  It has been recorded by other artists and often is also apart of wedding celebrations.
Here are the opening lyrics of this love song:

I said I wanna touch the earth I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
I wanna sleep on the hard ground in the comfort of your arms
On a pillow of blue bonnets in a blanket made of stars
Oh it sounds good to me
I said
Cowboy take me away fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray closer to heaven above and closer to you
Closer to you

Calligraphy More than Beautiful Writing

Heart Calligraphy by Zehda San Francisco California

The  word Calligraphy is derived from the greek word kalligraphía meaning beautiful writing. When a person creates beautiful handwriting there is allot more going on than the eye pleasing letters on paper.  Today January 23rd  is John Hancocks birthday. This day is now recognized as National Handwriting Day in honor of him and his amazing signature on The Declaration of Independence.

Handwriting is historically a valuable form of  communication and  historical documentation found in societies through out the world for centuries.  Teaching young children to learn penmanship has been a valuable part of  their education. They spent hours each year receiving formal instruction and practicing their handwriting.

Two young girls practice their cursive handwriting in the 1930s.

 (Credit: Harold M. Lambert/Lambert/Getty Images)

In the past  fifty years technology  has changed  the need for children to learn penmanship  as  typewriters and computers have become a faster way to create words.  Schools eliminated  penmanship curriculum  beginning in the 1980's and it is rarely taught in public schools today.  Unfortunately typing each letter on a computer  does not  develop or enhance the child's brain functions as much as writing by hand does.

Recent studies show that cursive writing  trains the brain  by  integrating visual, and tactile skills. When a child writes in cursive they focus more  because they have to think about each letter shape.  The increased brain development when writing in cursive is similar to the same that occurs from playing a musical instrument.  Due to budget cuts these programs are often being eliminated in the public schools.  So on this National Handwriting Day  it is worth considering that our children might be more proficient in science and math, if they were also learning cursive writing and how to play a musical instrument.

There are several penmanship programs available for children and adults to learn handwriting today. The Getty-Dubay Program is a wonderful curriculum created by Barbara Getty and Inga Dubay. They have taught calligraphy at the elementary and college levels and now offer seminars with their  handwriting program.

Love You to the Moon

Dolly Parton wrote several songs for the movie  Joyful Noise which she starred in with Queen Latifa  and Kris Kristofferson in 2012.  One of the songs she wrote for the  movie, From Here to the Moon and Back  was written with special meaning .  In her own words she tells the story behind the song:

"When I wrote ‘From Here to the Moon and Back,’
I needed to write a beautiful love song. I picked my husband,
who I love, and I thought, “Well, I’ll write some  beautiful song about him.”
It was about my husband in the movie, played by Kris  Kristofferson,
so I thought in order to make it really real and really touching,
I would write it about my real, true emotions about someone
I really do love and have loved for more than half of my life."

The movie Joyful Noise did not do well at the box office. However, From Here to the Moon and Back continues to gain in popularity  today as a special love song. It was recorded again by Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson in 2013  for Willie's  To All the Girls  album and is currently becoming a popular song for weddings.
